We’re often asked lots of questions about types of massage, how to and when you should massage even embarrassing massage questions. So we’ll run a series of blog posts to try to answer some of the most common questions we get in our clinic. Don’t forget, if you have a question you would like to ask, you can leave a comment below on the post.
What is Deep Tissue Massage and why would I request this style of massage?
Deep tissue massage is really what it says; it targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue during the massage therapy session. The massage requires the therapist to use much slower strokes across sections of your muscles. Sometimes not the most relaxing and pleasant of massage styles, but deep tissue massage will provide relief for locked or sore muscles. Chronic pain, muscle spasms, limited mobility, postural problems, muscle tension, recovery from injury are all common reasons our clients seek help through deep tissue massage. Deep Tissue Massage is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.
Is Deep Tissue Massage going to hurt?
We all have different levels at which we experience discomfort or pain. During a deep tissue massage, most of our clients find there is some discomfort or even pain. It is important that you communicate with us if you find that things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range.
With any deep tissue massage you may experience some soreness or pain after the massage but this usually subsides within a day or so. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. In some cases we may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage.
